Retreat Amidst The Trees

Retreat Amidst The Trees

Located in the hills overlooking Dunsborough this holiday home enjoys its surroundings to the fullest with its abundant floor to ceiling windows and glass doors.

Day_Front

Low maintenance and energy efficiency combine with quality, this holiday home retreat where the owners can come and go as they please was proudly built by WA custom homes builder Tallwood Constructions.

The home is constructed of concrete with a Spotted Gum timber cladding that was custom milled to the architects exact specifications. The result is a beautiful contrast between the natural timbers and the manmade concrete which together sit surprisingly well into the surrounding landscape.

While beautiful, the treed hill block presented its own challenges during construction. The “goat track” route in for the heavy machinery needed to construct the formed concreted walls made access difficult, though removing the existing trees on the block was not an option.

The inside outside feel of this home was one of the major considerations for the British owners and architects who wanted to make the most of the surrounding landscape. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the main living area where the fully stacking glass doors retract into the walls at either side, allowing flow from one side of the home to the other. Lush foliage frames the views on one side, while the other opens out to the swimming pool with its attractive bluestone paving and coping.

Stairs

The main floor retains its feeling of open-plan living thanks to the dramatic floating staircase. Marri step treads soften the transition from the harsh polished concrete floors of the ground floor to the Marri timber floors upstairs. The double-sided fireplace provides a natural divide between the living and dining areas, bringing warmth to both spaces when needed. In the kitchen, black gloss cabinetry and stainless steel appliances reflect the light, and there is direct access from the kitchen to the patio with its built-in grill and sink.

Upstairs each of the home’s three guest bedrooms features a balcony with frameless glass balustrades to fully enjoy the stunning views. The master bedroom takes this up a notch further with its floor to ceiling sliding glass door and there is a beautiful outlook from the free-standing bath in the master ensuite.

The home includes may energy efficient features including a re-circulating heat pump and photo voltaic panels, making it affordable to run, and the low maintenance interior and exterior provides the owners with a stunning holiday retreat that they can simply lock up and leave.
